“Bolder” is both a 4-track EP and a comic book by Roger Robinson and Piers Faccini, released on Beating Drum, a label also run by Faccini.
Described as “sparse, slowcore folk”, Bolder is the coming-together of Robinson’s wordsmith talents and Faccini’s fine grasp of composition, aesthetic and atmosphere in his role as producer and composer. Robinson initially started writing the lyrics in 2009, and the entire project, along with Faccini’s watercolour paintings, came into fruition as both a musical and artistic statement, with the double-release of the EP and comic book.
Piers Faccini, musician, painter/photographer and producer, born in England to an Italian father and English mother, has lived in France since his early childhood and it is here, at his home studio in the Cévennes in the south of France, that Horsedreamer came into being. Faccini, apart from his own contribution to modern folk in his capacity as singer-songwriter, has also produced and collaborated with many artists, including the South African guitarists Guy Buttery and Nibs van der Spuy. Recently he produced the captivating Scandinavian singstress Jenny Lysander.
Roger Robinson is a writer and musician from Trinidad currently based in the UK. He is the lead vocalist for the dubstep group King Midas Sound, and has also been hailed by American magazine Decibel as one of the most prolific black-British writers in the UK.
Robinson and Faccini’s do not only happen to excel in their respective artistic projects, they are also old friends, bounded together by the nomadic, diasporic nature of their family histories – something which has become the central theme for Horsedreamer’s Bolder EP. The songs and comic book album narrate and give substance to the in-between spaces explored as a nomad, an immigrant, an outsider. Bolder tells the tale of adapting and thriving – inwardly – with their craft.
The following passage sums up their musical and spiritual journey quite beautifully: “Horsedreamer is the song of their ancestral roaming, echoing down from the highest peaks to the deepest of valleys and from the harshest of deserts to the greenest of meadows, quietly in the whispering winds, Horsedreamer is singing.”

Décrit comme “un slowcore folk, clairsemé”, Bolder associe les talents de manieur de mots de Robinson et les compositions saisissantes de finesse de Faccini, à la fois esthétique et atmosphérique dans la production et la direction. C’est en 2009 que Robinson commença l’écriture des paroles ; le projet dans son ensemble, les aquarelles de Faccini incluses, se concrétisera sous la forme d’un objet musical doublé d’un manifeste artistique, avec la sortie simultanée du EP et du comics.
Piers Faccini, musicien, peintre/photographe et producteur, né en Angleterre d’un père italien et d’une mère anglaise, a vécu en France depuis son enfance, et c’est là, dans son studio des Cévennes dans le sud de la France, que Horsedreamer est venu au monde. Récemment il a produit la captivante chanteuse scandinave Jenny Lysander.
Roger Robinson est un musicien et écrivain basé en ce moment sur Londres. Il est le chanteur du groupe de dubstep King Midas Sound. Le magazine américain Decibel l’a élevé au rang d’écrivain anglais black le plus prolifique du Royaume-Uni.
Robinson et Faccini ne sont pas seulement deux artistes qui excellent dans leurs œuvres, ils sont aussi deux amis, liés par cette constante nomade, la nature diasporique de leur histoire familiale, un élément central de Bolder. Les chansons comme la bande dessinée relatent et donnent de la matière aux entre-mondes explorés par les nomades, les immigrants, les outsiders. Bolder retrace un conte initiatique florissant, introspectif.
Le passage qui suit résume joliment leur quête musicale et spirituelle : “Horsedreamer est le chant de leurs errances ancestrales, son écho parcourant les monts les plus hauts jusqu’aux vallées les plus profondes et des déserts les plus rudes jusqu’aux prairies les plus vertes, calmement dans le murmure du vent, Horsedreamer chante.”
