[EN] South African audiences first became better acquainted with Alice Phoebe Lou when a performance of hers on TEDTalk went viral. But this bright young singstress from Kommetjie, Cape Town, had been building up quite a following in Berlin over the past two years, where she’d been busking all over public spaces in the city.

When listening to her music, particularly her voice, and the creativity of her compositions and lyrics, it is astonishing to find out that Alice Phoebe Lou never intended to pursue music at first. She went to Europe during a gap-year after finishing high school, where she did fire dancing in squares in Amsterdam in order to earn enough money to travel further. Eventually, she ended up in Berlin, but was struggling to earn a living from her fire dancing. So she decided to play guitar and sing instead. She got noticed for the Ted video when she was performing in a park.

Alice Phoebe Lou simply stands out among other performers – which is why her busking has taken her from the streets and parks in Berlin to appreciative and growing audiences in Cape Town and beyond – having toured the US recently. Record labels have also been knocking at her door, but she has refused them all, having explained to a Channel24 journalist that she preferred keeping her creative control and that she completely disagreed with the concept of becoming a commodity for businessmen to sell.

Alice Phoebe Lou is currently performing alongside Mateo, a Berlin-based Italian multi-instrumentalist, who adds a different dimension to her folk-based guitar compositions. Together, the duo invite listeners into their gentle hinterland where spirits run free. Even while the music is soothing, allowing the listener to drift along, Alice Phoebe Lou’s powerful presence and principled attitude allow her to occupy a space as one of the most captivating young artists writing and performing at this moment.

[FR] Le nom de Alice Phoebe Lou est devenu plus familier au public sud-africain après l’une de ses performances pour TEDTalk, dont la vidéo a fait le tour du pays. Deux ans avant cela cependant, cette brillante chanteuse originaire de Cape Town (plus précisément Kommetjie) avait déjà trouvé un public à Berlin, où elle jouait dans la rue et les stations de métro.

Quand on écoute sa musique, en particulier sa voix, et que l’on découvre ses talents de compositrice, on s’étonne d’apprendre qu’elle n’avait jamais jusqu’alors eu l’intention de faire carrière dans la musique. Elle est arrivée en Europe pour une année sabbatique après le lycée, pendant laquelle elle s’est adonnée à la jonglerie à Amsterdam afin de récolter assez d’argent pour continuer à voyager. Arrivée à Berlin, ses numéros de jonglerie ne rapportant pas assez, elle décide de chanter accompagnée de sa guitare. C’est en jouant dans des espaces publics tels que des parcs qu’elle a été repérée, notamment pour la vidéo de TED.

Alice Phoebe Lou se détache tout simplement du lot ; c’est pourquoi sa musique n’est plus réservée aux rues de Berlin et que son public s’est élargi à Cape Town et au-delà (notamment lors d’une récente tournée aux Etats-Unis). Les maisons de disques ont elles aussi flairé l’aubaine, mais se sont toutes heurtées à un mur. Alice en a évoqué la raison lors d’un entretien avec un journaliste de Channel 24, expliquant qu’elle préférait garder le contrôle sur sa créativité et qu’elle détestait l’idée de voir son art devenir un objet à vendre.

Alice Phoebe Lou joue actuellement aux côtés de Mateo, un multi-instrumentiste italien basé à Berlin, qui apporte une nouvelle dimension à ses compositions de guitare folk. Ensemble, ils invitent leur public à une balade dans leur monde où les esprits vagabondent. Bien que la musique d’Alice Phoebe Lou soit apaisante, sa présence et la force de ses principes lui permettent d’occuper une place de choix parmi les jeunes artistes les plus captivants du moment.
