PARISSOWETO has teamed up with THE BROTHER MOVES ON to bring you a mixtape, “The Voices In My Head”, focused on the voice as an instrument in South African music. This compilation serves to give South African and French audiences alike an insight into the creative goings-on of the Johannesburg underground, and, more particularly, to tickle the tastebuds of all those who are heading to the Trans Musicales Festival in Rennes, France, this December where The Brother Moves On, Kaang and Okmalumkoolkat will be representing the fertile Joburg music scene.
Siyabonga Mthembu (frontman, TBMO) is inviting you into this world, a site of creation shared by artists, musicians, friends and family, and provides a story for each track in the mixtape, which you can read below.
THE BROTHER MOVES ON est l’invité d’honneur de la toute dernière compilation de PARISSOWETO. On vous la présente sous forme de mixtape, intitulée « The Voices In My Head », un hommage à la voix en tant qu’instrument dans la musique sud-africaine. Du jazz réinterprété par la jeunesse de Johannesburg, cette mixtape offre aux audiences françaises tout comme sud-africaines un aperçu de l’innovation musicale qui habite les scènes et les studios de cette ville. Rendez-vous le 5 décembre avec The Brother Moves On, Kaang et Okmalumkoolkat aux Rencontres Trans Musicales de Rennes.
Siyabonga Mthembu (chanteur, TBMO) nous invite dans son monde, une fraternité d’artistes et de musiciens, et nous raconte l’origine de chaque morceau dans cette mixtape ci-dessous.
Siyabonga Mthembu (TBMO): “The Voices in My Head is an ode to happy brown baby voices in the Johannesburg scene that I view as family. Their music is kindred to what we are doing and speaks to a new contemporary understanding of what South African jazz is to a new generation. We value the traditions of the music, we know ingoma is the root word to sangoma, the healer who heals through the natural by activating the frequencies we’ve known and experienced for millennia. This compilation is done as part of the celebration of the release of our new project entitled Black Tax which will see us release a track a month for the next nine months. The first track is “Shiyanomayini” and the single and video were released on the 30th of October, along with a bonus track, “Bayagoloza”. We are travelling to France where we will be playing at the Transmusicales Festival in Rennes on the 5th of December and this playlist should keep you warm till we arrive. And no we aren’t all from Soweto.
This mixtape is mixed by my childhood friend EnEskay from Acidchipmonks with songs I freestyle on mixed by Jab-A-Jaw.”
Siyabonga Mthembu (TBMO) : « The Voices in My Head est une ode aux « happy brown baby voices » de Johannesbourg, je les considère comme ma famille. Leur musique nous ressemble, et représente une vision contemporaine de ce qu’est le jazz sud-africain pour les nouvelles générations. Nous accordons beaucoup d’importance aux traditions de la musique, nous savons que « ingoma » est le mot-racine de « sangoma », le guérisseur qui guérit par les notes naturelles, en activant des fréquences que nous connaissons et ressentons depuis des millénaires. Cette compilation est aussi là pour célébrer la création de notre nouveau projet Black Tax, avec lequel nous sortirons un morceau par mois pour les neuf mois à venir. La première chanson, « Shiyanomayini », le single et le clip, sont sortis le 30 octobre, accompagnés d’un titre bonus, « Bayagoloza ». Nous arrivons en France et jouerons aux Trans Musicales de Rennes le 5 décembre, cette playlist devrait vous donnez de quoi vous occuper en attendant notre arrivée. Et au fait, non, on ne vient pas tous de Soweto.
Cette mixtape a été mixée par mon ami d’enfance, EnEskay de Acidchipmonks, avec des chansons sur lesquelles je fais du freestyle, qui sont elles mixées par Jab-A-Jaw.»

2. The Brother Moves On – “A Long Way from Home” (skit from A New Myth)
“We recorded this skit while we were in Paris and A New Myth was being mixed by Fez Thela and Nkululeko Mthembu, our late brother at home. Fez and Nkush got mugged on their way home and the drive was lost. This skit is the reminder.” | « On a enregistré ce morceau quand on était à Paris et que Fez Thela et Nkululeko Mthembu, notre défunt frère, mixaient A New Myth. Fez et Nkush se sont fait agresser sur le chemin du retour et ont perdu le disque dur. Ce morceau est comme un souvenir. »

3. Thandi Ntuli – “Umthandazo” (The Offering)
“The piano in South Africa is a sacred instrument and in a male-dominated space there’s Thandi Ntuli sitting strong and furthering a tradition with grace. This year I travelled to the cold national arts festival to only see Thandi play. After watching her show I took walks listening and decided to re-assess my goals as an artist in this country. A week later I watched her play at the Orbit and decided to buy her album. The beauty is that she also sings, composes and enjoys dancing.” | « Le piano est un instrument sacré en Afrique du Sud, et dans un monde dominé par les hommes, il y a Thandi Ntuli, bien assise, faisant perdurer une tradition avec élégance. Cette année, je suis allé au National Arts Festival uniquement pour voir Thandi jouer. Après avoir vu son concert, je me suis promené en l’écoutant, et j’ai décidé de repenser mes objectifs en tant qu’artiste dans ce pays. Une semaine plus tard, je l’ai vue jouer au club The Orbit et j’ai acheté son album. En plus, ce qui est beau, c’est qu’elle chante, compose et aime danser. »

4. Tumi Mogorosi – “Gift of Three” (Project Elo)
“Project Elo is captained by drummer Tumi Mogorosi. It features what is the cream of the crop of the jazz heads whose solo works we are waiting for with baited breath. Cats such as Mthunzi Mvubu (alto sax), Malcolm Jiyane (trombone), three amazing operatic singers and Sibusile Xaba who has an amazing project named “The Unlearning” feature in this band. Tumi’s and his amazing grounding influence Gabisile Motuba are in Switzerland at the moment recording a new project with a Swiss trio. Project Elo represented South Africa at 2014 Transmusicales and featured MOBO award winner from Sons of Kemet, Shabaka Hutchings.” | « Project Elo est dirigé par le batteur Tumi Mogorosi. On y retrouve la crème de la crème des jazzmen dont on attend les projets solo en retenant notre souffle. Des musiciens tels que Mthunzi Mvubu (saxophone alto), Malcolm Jiyane (trombone), trois artistes lyriques incroyables, et Sibusile Xaba dont le projet génial « The Unlearning » fait partie de ce groupe. 5. DJ Jab-A-Jaw ft Siya Mthembu from TBMO – “Gwababa”
“DJ Jab-A-Jaw and I have known each other since we were youngins in Kempton Park in the East Rand. He’s a DJ I respect, and lately we’ve been visiting the idea of me playing live with him.” | « DJ Jab-A et moi, on se connaît depuis qu’on est gosses, à Kempton Park dans l’East Rand. 7. Alice in Pondoland – “Warcry”
“Alice in Pondoland is Zwelizwe Mthembu, guitarist of TBMO’s, production crew. It takes it all to the jungle, Pondoland in the Eastern Cape is very dear to South Africa from pre-apartheid protest to the local Marikana massacre. Alice is a reference to Alice in Wonderland. Zweli’s other half in the production crew is Cashmere Cat and he goes by the name The Mad Hatter. The duo will be releasing a 4-track EP soon.” | « Alice in Pondoland, c’est Zwelizwe Mthembu, guitariste pour The Brother Moves On et producteur. Direction la jungle. Le Pondoland situé dans le Cap oriental, est un lieu significatif pour l’ Afrique du Sud, lieu de manifestations pré-apartheid ou encore du massacre de Marikana. Alice est une référence à Alice au pays des merveilles. Cashmere Cat, l’autre moitié de Zweli à la production, se fait appeler The Mad Hatter (le chapelier fou). 8. Zetina Mosia – “Bionic Woman”
“Zetina Mosia is a 26-year-old Ghanaian/South African cutting edge jazz vocalist that experiments with combining jazz, funk, dub-step and trip-hop creating a genre of music South Africa has still yet to define. With her soon-to-be-released debut album, titled “The Round About”, she takes one on a complete circle of emotions. Fusing traditional jazz with trip-hop and funk elements over conscious meditative lyrics, her voice transports you into a world where the soul is sometimes too shy to enter.” | « Zetina Mosia, 26 ans, ghanéenne et sud-africaine, est une chanteuse de jazz avant-gardiste qui aime expérimenter en mélangeant jazz, funk, dubstep et trip hop, donnant vie à une genre de musique que l’Afrique du Sud n’a pas encore défini. Dans son premier album dont la sortie est toute proche, « The Round About », elle vous fait passer par toutes les émotions. 10. Dela (France) vs TBMO – “We Will All Be Free” vs “Wenu Wetla”
“This one is for all our fallen cats, we know that you are there for us. Dela is a mad producer and the only representative on the list who is French.” | « Ce morceau est pour tous nos amis tombés, on sait que vous êtes là pour nous. Dela est un producteur un peu barré, il est notre représentant Français sur cette liste.»
11. NANZ ft Siyabonga Mthembu + Zelizwe Mthembu of The Brother Moves On – “A New Mourning”
“Nanz is the cousin to the Mthembu brothers in the Johannesburg art/music collective The Brother Moves On. After having a dream about the brother who passed she wrote this amazing song in remembrance. It’s a new mourning for me and you. On returning from a school holiday, Nandi went to record with Siyabonga and Zwelizwe. This is the recording.” | « Nanz est la cousine des frères Mthembu du collectif d’art et de musique The Brother Moves On à Johannesbourg. Après avoir fait un rêve du frère qui nous a quitté, elle a écrit cette incroyable chanson en sa mémoire. It’s a New Mourning for Me and You. 12. Zuko Collective – “Letter to my Brother” (Relationtrips, album)
“Zuko Collective is led by a headstrong queen by the name of Nozuko Mapoma. One half of sister-singing duo LoveGlori, Nozuko is the sister that moved on to a project which involves 6 other members. One of which is The Brother Moves On’s Zwelizwe Mthembu. The collective are my hardest working band in 2014 and have just recorded and released a 13-track debut titled “Relationtrips”, their big wish is to travel the globe with their sound and ethos. This particular track is composed by Zelizwe Mthembu and is dedicated to Nkululeko Mthembu, his late cousin.” | « Zuko Collective est mené par une reine à forte tête du nom de Nozuko Mapoma. Avec sa sœur, elles forment le duo LoveGlori. Nozuko est passé à un projet avec six autres membres. Parmi eux, Zwelizwe Mthembu de TBMO. Zuko Collective est un groupe qui travaille très dur. En 2014, ils ont enregistré et sorti leur premier album de 13 titres intitulé « Relationtrips ». Ce qu’ils veulent, c’est parcourir le monde avec leur son et leur philosophie. 14. Sad Arab Fags (Stuttgart, DE) – “Song for my Grandfather”, cover of “Wenu Wetla” by The Brother Moves On
“Siyabonga Mthembu, our frontman, was invited to a residency at Theatre Rampe in Stuttgart, called the Vagabond Congress. The name Sad Arab Fag was coined by Egyptian graffiti artist Aya Tarek after doing a photo series by the same name. Sad Arab Fag have done an EP of covers of TBMO and hope to one day play a gig with TBMO in Johannesburg and Stuttgart.” | « Siyabonga Mthembu, notre frontman, a été invité à une résidence appelée the Vagabond Congress, au Theater Rampe à Stuttgart.
