[EN] When reading the Hinds Brothers’ story it is easy to see why Aden and Wren Hinds ended up becoming the captivating folk duo that they are today. Born and raised in Kwazulu-Natal, which has since the sixties been a haven of roots music, along with its rolling hills, cultural riches and surfer culture, the backdrop of their upbringing shines through in their music. The brothers grew up in a musical family, their father Kevin Hinds having played in various folk outfits in the sixties and seventies. Growing up in the eighties and nineties, the two brothers, greatly influenced by their dad’s music collection, would record music together in their father’s home studio.

After school the two played in various different bands, and after those disbanded, ended up undertaking solo spiritual journeys, with Aden travelling to Vrindavan and Rishikesh in India, and Wren, after graduating from the National School of Arts, travelled to the Middle-East, exploring Jordan, Israel and Egypt, where he would busk in the streets to get by. During this time, Syd Kitchen, the late father of anglo-African folk, became Aden’s mentor, and helped him hone his songwriting craft. When Wren returned from Israel the brothers started playing as a duo, now well after their studies and personal journeys. They recorded “Acoustic Session”, a live EP, in 2009 and played festivals like the legendary Splashy Fen. In 2013 they released their debut full-length album, ‘Ocean of Milk’, which saw them recording in seven different studios across the country, over two years, and was mastered by New York producer Alan Douches (Sufjan Stevens, Roky Erickson).

The musical telepathy these brothers share is tangible in their music; from their compositions through to the harmonies, and the stories contained within their diverging experiences. [FR] Lorsqu’on se penche sur l’histoire de Hinds Brothers, on comprend tout de suite pourquoi Aden et Wren Hinds sont devenus le duo folk fascinant qu’ils sont aujourd’hui. Ayant tout deux grandi au KwaZulu-Natal (qui depuis les années 1960 regorge de musique roots, avec ses paysage vallonnés, ses richesses culturelles et sa culture surf), le décor de leur enfance se reflète dans leur musique. Les deux frères ont grandi au sein d’une famille de musiciens ; leur père, Kevin Hinds, a fait partie de plusieurs groupes de folk au cours des années 1960 et 1970. Ayant grandi dans les années 1980 et 1990, les frères, très inspirés par la musique de leur père, s’enregistraient ensemble dans le home studio de ce dernier. Après l’école, les frangins ont joués avec plusieurs groupes différents, et lorsque ces groupes se sont séparés, ils ont chacun fini par entreprendre un voyage spirituel en solitaire. Aden est parti pour Vrindavan, puis Rishikesh en Inde ; et Wren, après avoir été diplômé de la National School of Arts, a voyagé à travers le Moyen-Orient, en Jordanie, Israël et en Égypte où il jouait dans la rue pour s’en sortir. Alors, Syd Kitchen, le regretté père de la folk anglo-africaine, est devenu le mentor de Aden et l’a aidé à affûter ses talents d’auteur. Après le retour d’Israël de Wren, les frères commencent à jouer en duo. Ils enregistrent « Acoustic Session », un EP live, en 2009 et foulent la scène de festivals tels que le légendaire Splashy Fen. En 2013, ils sortent leur premier album, « Ocean of Milk », pour lequel ils ont enregistré au sein de sept studios différents à travers le pays, sur une période de deux ans, masterisé par le producteur new-yorkais Alan Douches (Sufjan Stevens, Roky Erickson).

La télépathie musicale qu’ils partagent est palpable, que ça soit dans leurs compositions, leurs accords, ou dans les histoires portées par leurs expériences divergentes.
