[EN] Raheem Kemet is a prominent figure in Durban’s music scene, notably as rapper, musician, vocalist, beatboxer and songwriter. He is a self-taught artist, who overcame a speech impediment during his childhood by memorising hip hop lyrics and practising in the front of the mirror. The boy on the other side of the looking glass has become one of the country’s most dexterous cultural agents; a master of words, songs, and performance.

From performance art, poetry, soul, jazz and Durban’s underground punk and hip hop scenes, Raheem Kemet’s art find expression in many forms, counting collaborations with Steve Fataar from The Flames and Madala Kunene.

Raheem Kemet’s most recent solo endeavour takes form in The Fire, the second EP in a succession of four EP releases, entitled “The Element Series” (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water). The Fire follows The Wind, released in December and produced by hip hop producer Myndphlo.

“Each EP will be produced by different producers giving the projects a distinct feel from each other,” Raheem explains. The Fire was produced by Dave Audinary; Raheem adds that “it has a more live feel to it; reminiscent of old school funk/rock ‘n roll/soul.” Indeed, as the Durban is Yours blog duly noted, “The Fire” (title track and single) is “all about keeping the fire alive and pushing through adversity. It’ll put a bounce in your step and if you don’t find yourself moving to the beat, you’ve got no soul.”

At Parissoweto we are convinced that Raheem’s Element series will take him to the skies. As the artist himself remarks on the follow-up of Fire to Wind, “Wind helps fire to spread, so to speak.”
